Kinship Library: NDSM, Amsterdam 2025
Kinship Library is more than a listening experience; it is a living archive. The architectural installation invites visitors to engage intuitively with voices and sounds from various perspectives, corners, and crevices.
The audio collection weaves together narrative-driven music rooted in the diaspora, curated by Innavisions, underrepresented voices in architecture from Afaina de Jong’s own archive, and the rich history of NDSM. Personal stories of people connected to the NDSM shipyard have been recorded by Stratenmakers Audiocollectief. These memories come from former (female) workers, labor migrants, pioneering artists, and creatives who have all shaped the shipyard over the years.

Souvenirs: New New York Icons:
New York
2017The installation Counterspace was designed in collaboration with Inna Vision for the exhibition New New York Icons at the Storefront for Art and Architecture. The installation takes the issue of the ongoing erasure of identity in the 21stcentury city as a starting point. It is a critical approach to the shifting and complex iconography of the city and its goal is to introduce a new type of gathering space and, with this, a new way to relate to form, matter, representation, and agency. The spatial model is made as a open air gathering space for the neighborhoods Brownsville, East New York, and Canarsie. Respectively also the only three neighborhoods in Brooklyn that are not gentrifying. Brooklyn boasts many eye-catching buildings, but there are hardly any iconic architectural representations in these three neighborhoods with predominantly project housing. The sunsets at Canarsie Piers, the colorful street murals and the famous street basketball court the Hole in Brownsville, were taken as a starting point. The two distinct sides of the souvenir represent an at times tough and inaccessible part of the city, but also the vibrancy of the people that live in an architectural wasteland, but who still are able to create culture that spreads beyond the confines of their neighborhood.

Mutliplicity of Other: Venice Architecture Biennale, Dutch Pavilion 2024
Concept & Design by Afaina de Jong & Innavisions
Space of Other spatializes the complex concept and values of The Multiplicity of Other: other ways of life, other ways of contextualizing information regarding space, other ways of inhabiting and creating social relations within the context of the city. Space of Other explores the potential of a design language that questions the patterns and models we have inherited; see, for instance, the highly aesthetic ‘rational’ white space of the Dutch Pavilion. Inside, visitors experience each other and themselves in relation to this very specific spatial environment. Space of Other hosts talks and performances that further explore potentialities of the Multiplicity of Other in order to change the design paradigm.

Station hofplein: Mini Mall, Rotterdam 2011
The redevelopment of the former train station into a shopping mall for creatives was realized with a holistic approach in mind: from restoring the interior arches, designing a new floor plan that would accommodate a wide diversity of starting creative entrepreneurs, to new technical installations so the new entrepreneurs wouldn’t freeze, to new facades for a connection to the street, to the creation of internal shared space for events, and the urban design around the building as well as the marketing and identity.

City of the Sun for Metro 54:
Metro 54 at TENT, Rotterdam
2016The spatial installation City of the Sun is a collaboration with Innavisions and explores a new visual and architectural form language. It was made for the exhibition Blueprint: Whose urban Appropriation? is this at Tent Rotterdam in 2017. City of the Sun draws inspiration from the gateways into Heliopolis, one of the oldest and cities in ancient Egypt and now a suburb of Cairo. But is a contemporary take on the highly culturally diverse make up of life in the city and in particular Rotterdam; The inaccessible grey city where behind closed doors rich tapestries of cosmopolitan urban life. The graphics are inspired by music and the concept of afrofuturism.
